Definition of Free Software Types: • Freeware ~ Totally free for all users. Support is usually unavailable.
• Shareware ~ Most often it is a 'cut-down' varsion of the author's software with limited functionality. Support is usually available from the author.
• Trialware ~ Fully-functional software with a built-in expiration date. Full support is usually available.
• Abandonware ~ Fully functional software that has been 'abandoned' by the author. Support is usually unavailable.
• Tipware (or DonationWare) ~ Totally free software, but the author asks users to 'Tip' as much as they think the program is worth. Full support is usually available, with 'Tippers' often getting a little something extra.
Why bother with shareware or trialware? There is a Ton of software available... but only a small percentage is true freeware. You can get a free program to do almost anything, but if you want a program that will do everything you want, sometimes you just have to buy one. But which one do you buy? Say you are looking for a photo editing application for a family newsletter or to make digital scrapbook pages... whatever the reason... you can download three (or ten) different trial version programs and try them all out. After the trial period is over, you can get the one that you like best and know that you haven't wasted any of your hard-earned cash on a crap program.
